Bernd Bender has been a student of Soto Zen since 1984.
After moving to San Francisco from Germany in 1994, he began his studies
at the Zen Center. Bernd received Lay Dharma Transmission (authorization to
teach) from Dairyu Michael Wenger in 2010. In 2012 he moved to Berlin and
founded Akazienzendo (www.akazienzendo.de). Bernd is inspired by how
the simplicity of Zen practice meets the infinite complexity of life.
“Learn the backward step that turns your light
inwardly to illuminate your self.”
Dogen Zenji
How to find happiness in the midst of uncertainty.
When things become too complex, when they constantly change, when very little feels reliable – where do we find our
happiness? From the perspective of Zen, the only real source of happiness is our own mind. This is good news, because our
mind cannot be taken away from us. In Zen-meditation we learn how to rest in our mind as it is – filled with thoughts, emotions,
doubts and fears. With a mind at rest, we can face every situation with openness and care and contribute to the happiness
of all people.
